Summary
One of the themes machine design The highlight is the shift to systems-focused thinking, as we cover the fundamentals of mechanical systems design as well as the cutting-edge technologies that are transforming the factory floor.
A critical challenge in this exploration is the reality that the skills gap will only widen as manufacturers accelerate their digital transformation to Industry 4.0. In conversation with Dr. Ashley Huderson, director of engineering education and outreach at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), machine design examines the jobs of the future and the skills needed for these roles. Dr. Huderson draws on a recent ASME research study that investigates the future workflows and skills needed for mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and machinist roles over the next decade. While the study does not disaggregate data on historically marginalized identities, Dr. Huderson explains how those interested in diversity, equity and inclusion will connect the broader implications.

Rehana Begg is Managing Editor at machine design. She has spent the last decade in the B2B trenches of industrial manufacturing, focusing on engineering, operations and management. Her career has taken her from corporate boardrooms to factory floors and underground mining sites, covering everything from IIoT/software, digital transformation and continuous improvement, to MRO for the automotive and agri-food. Begg holds a master’s degree in journalism and an MBA focused on project management. She is the recipient of an EBBIE Award (Editor of the Year, 2021), which recognizes her contributions to the development of a Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) hub that compiles coverage of underrepresentation and issues affecting the field of engineering, in addition to showcasing the contributions of equity-seeking groups.
Ashley Huderson, Ph.D., Director of Engineering Education and Outreach, ASME, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Ashley Huderson, Ph.D., is director of engineering education and outreach at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), where she directs the department of engineering education and outreach in the design, planning, organizing, overseeing, and implementing educational programs and projects that define ASME’s role and impact in K-12 STEM education, engineering education, and scholarships. She has also received several awards and accolades, including the 2019 McD #35 Alum of the Year Award, the 2020 BEYA Modern-Day Technology Leader Award, and the 2020 UNCF WIAC Grace Walker Phillips Leadership Award. Originally from New Orleans, she completed his undergraduate training at Spelman College (2006), a certificate in health policy (2012) and a doctorate at Meharry Medical College (2013). His postdoctoral work included a fellowship at the Office of Health Disparities and Minority Research at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Cancer Center (2015) and a 2015-2017 fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of science, science and technology policy (AAAS S&T) in engineering education. and Centers’ division (EEC) at the National Science Foundation.
