The education director of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu on Thursday ordered the suspension of two teachers after an audio clip of them speaking out against certain castes recently went viral.

According to the leaked pre-election Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) audio clip at a government-run upper secondary school near Vilathikulam, where nearly 700 students are enrolled, a computer teacher – identified only as Meena – talks about first to a male student and later hands the phone allegedly to math teacher Kalaiselvi. We hear the latter tell the boy that the elections are going to take place and that certain teachers insist that the administration does not enlist the pupils of his village.

Following a slight increase in Covid-19 cases in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in association with the state health department has planned to deploy mobile RT-PCR teams to areas high number of cases. According to a statement from the civic body on Thursday, a total of 797 RT-PCR tests were performed on Wednesday.

In Chennai, no less than 140 primary health centers and 16 urban community centers were performing RT-PCR tests free of charge. Due to the increase in cases – particularly in four areas – Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam, Teynampet and Adyar, eight mobile RT-PCR teams with two for each area will be on duty from Friday June 17. Residents can dial 1913 to have their RT-PCR tests performed at the door.
