Orono, Maine – The University of Maine received the 2020-21 Walter Harrison Academic Cup after achieving a record-breaking GPA of 3.62, the highest GPA in league history.

“Congratulations to Maine and to each of our member institutions and student-athletes on such an impressive academic year,” said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. “The success that our student-athletes are having collectively in the classroom this year while dealing with the challenges of the pandemic is truly impressive. They continue to raise the bar every year.

The Walter Harrison Academic Cup is presented annually at the America East Institution, whose student-athletes have the highest cumulative grade point average during that academic year. The 2020-21 Academic Cup title marks the third time Maine has won the award and their first time since the 2006-07 season.

The Black Bears have also won five individual GPA athletic titles, the most of any America East program. Women’s basketball posted a score of 3.92, the highest of any team in America East in any sport. Field hockey (3.70), women’s soccer (3.84), women’s swimming and diving (3.67) and men’s track and field (3.47) also received individual GPA athletic titles.

The Academic Cup, created by the America East Board of Trustees in 1995, was named University of Hartford President Walter Harrison last year.
