HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – Cabell County Career Technology Center’s Summer Skills Camp gives students a chance to broaden their horizons.
“When they come here, they have the opportunity to look at the different types of professions that are out there,” said Frank Barnett, director of career technology training for Cabell County.
The skills camp allows students from across the region to test their skills in areas such as baking, graphic design, hairdressing, welding, and more.
“I’m learning to do things,” said Emma Withrow, a middle school camper. “I never knew how to braid until Monday. I never knew how to do nails until Tuesday, it’s really fun.
The two-week educational camp has over 300 campers exploring their interests.
“I hope they come away with a little excitement,” Barnett said. “Like it’s something they may want to do. Even if they go to a four-year college, they can still do it.
Campers learn new hobbies, discover new career paths and develop new skills
“I learned to take fingerprints,” Withrow said. “I learned about blood, the different speeds and how you can tell which weapon was used with the amount of blood on the ground or what the blood looks like.”
Thanks to these courses, many students are already eager to determine which courses and areas they wish to explore in the future.
