UT Dairy Science students earn recognition | Agriculture

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – Dairy students from the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Tennessee won several awards at the American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA) Virtual Annual Meeting 2021 in July. The meeting attracted nearly 90 students and their advisors as well as over 1,200 professionals and guests from the United States, Mexico, Canada and beyond.

During the meetings, students participated in professional development, educational and networking events as well as multiple competitions, including article and poster competitions. Students also had the opportunity to attend virtual seminars, oral sessions and poster sessions presented by professional members of the organization.

The students attended the meetings as members of the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD). ADSA-SAD is a division of the parent organization that works to develop leadership and promote scholarship among students interested in the dairy industry, and to encourage students to pursue careers in dairy science. There are nearly 300 undergraduate student members at ADSA.

UT’s animal science students represented well, winning these awards:

  • second place at the Dairy Club Scrapbook Competition (Chapter Award)
  • second place in Dairy Foods Oral Presentation Contest (Taylor Van Hout, Junior from Knoxville, Tennessee)
  • third place in the dairy production oral presentation contest (Loren Foley, junior from Waynesville, Ohio)

In addition, Jayme Ozburn (Junior from Lewisburg, Tennessee) has been named second vice president of the Affiliate Student Division and Abby McCalmon (recent UT graduate and new Masters student in Animal Science at UT Jackson, Tennessee) entered the original research oral presentation competition.

“I am extremely proud of these undergraduates! says Liz Eckelkamp, ​​assistant professor and dairy specialist at UT Extension. Eckelkamp was also honored. She was appointed Third Year Advisor to the Affiliate Student Division.

ADSA was established in 1906 as a scientific and educational association serving the dairy and related industries. It facilitates the discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge and information in dairy science.

Next year’s annual meeting will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, June 19-22, 2022.
