New Mexico names 2022 teacher of the year

Lorynn Guerrero, an English teacher at New America School-Las Cruces, is the teacher of the year 2022, the public education department said on Friday. During his tenure at New America School-Las Cruces, a charter high school, Guerrero implemented a program for teen parents that includes daycare.

This year’s award is primarily sponsored by the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, which will contribute up to $ 25,000 in “professional development and support opportunities” to Guerrero.

Santa Fe Public School Fourth Grade Students Get Forest Passes

The Santa Fe National Forest last week handed out “Every Kid Outdoors” passes to all fourth-grade students in the district. The passes provide free access to federally managed parks, forests, monuments, wildlife refuges and water bodies.

Fourth-graders are also eligible for free Christmas tree permits, to find and fell a tree on the land of the Santa Fe National Forest starting November 22.

More financial aid for college students

The State Department of Social Services and Department of Higher Education announced last week that additional funding was available for Education Works.

Education Works offers up to 24 months of financial assistance to families with at least one person enrolled in college.

This year, $ 845,500 is available for the program which can serve 150 families per month. Eligible applicants must be eligible for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and be enrolled in a two or four year program, or a graduate or postgraduate program.
