The Rhode Island House of Representatives has passed a bill that will make feminine hygiene products free for schoolchildren, CBS News affiliate WPRI reported.
The State House of Representatives shared in a tweet Tuesday that lawmakers approved the bill that will make hygiene products available to students statewide.
@ wpri12: Rotary lawmakers have approved legislation that would make feminine hygiene products available to students statewide. If the law is enacted, free tampons and towels should be made available in female bathrooms and gender neutral in public schools in grades 5 to 12.

“If the law is enacted, free tampons and towels must be made available in female, gender-neutral washrooms in public schools in grades 5 through 12,” State House said in the tweet.
State Representative Carol Hagan McEntee (D), who is one of the sponsors of the bill, told the CBS affiliate that the bill would help alleviate embarrassment for students.

“These products are a daily necessity for so many students and just as schools provide toilet paper for bathrooms,†Senator Valarie Lawson (D) told WPRI. “These products should also be readily available to our students in need. “
The bill now sits on Gov. Dan McKee (D) ‘s desk, WPRI noted.
