GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The Riverside Educational Center, or REC for short, is a non-profit after-school program for at-risk children that offers after-school tutoring and enrichment programs for children from grades 1 to 12.

“The Riverside Educational Center is experiencing significant growth this fall,” said Joy Hudak, Executive Director of REC. “We have just received additional grants and are adding 4 more elementary schools to our program. We will therefore be in 15 schools. 9 primary schools, 4 colleges and 2 high schools.

REC will expand to include Chipeta, Chatfield, Pear Park and Nisley Elementary Schools, serving 200 additional students. That is to say a total of 700 pupils and 15 schools. To cope with this growth, REC will hire 60 additional tutors. These are the perfect part-time jobs for students, retirees, and anyone who cares about helping kids who need it most. The training is offered and the salary starts at $ 15 an hour and runs between 2:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. depending on the school.

“When we are looking for tutors, we are looking for positive role models for students and people who want to give back to their community,” said Jack Curry, senior director of the REC program.

REC’s goal is to provide children who fall behind no fault of their own a safe place to go after school to promote their success, whether academically, emotionally or socially.

“We offer free academic tutoring, basic skills work, homework help and enrichment,” said Curry. “Which for us ranges from yoga and 3D printing, to field trips to the mesa math and science center, eureka.”

Children are eligible for this program if they have 2 or more identified risk factors, such as low income, minority groups, or those who come from a single parent household. But most eligible children attend one of the schools served by REC.

Edgar Corona, who started as a REC student and is now at CMU, shares this about tutoring and working for REC. “As a tutor, I’m just happy to be able to help the students. I can help them prepare for the challenges I faced moving forward. When I was a student, I liked having someone else to talk to, someone who would help me in school, but still listen to me while doing so.

“The staff really enjoy working at REC because they know and can feel the impact of what they do within the programming,” said Hudak. “This program, in our opinion, is so important in our community to help children, especially during this past year and the impacts of the pandemic where children were missing school or were unable to engage. socially.”
