Luther College and Winneshiek Medical Center (WMC) announce plans to form a new partnership to expand student health services on campus. From February 2022, WMC will assume sole responsibility for health services at the Luther College Health Service site at Larsen Hall and provide athletic training services to student-athletes from the 2022-2023 academic year.

“We are delighted to enter into this partnership with Winneshiek Medical Center because of the excellent range of care and services that we know our students will appreciate, but also because we recognize that Decorah benefits when our two organizations work together for the most. great good, ”said President Jenifer K. Ward.

Previously, Luther managed all aspects of the health service and athletic training with the support of local clinicians from WMC and the Gundersen health system. Now, at the start of the spring semester, students will have expanded access to quality care provided by WMC, which has professional and management services agreements with Mayo Clinic Health System.

“WMC is excited about the prospect of this expanded partnership with Luther College,” said Thomas Marquardt, WMC Chief Medical Officer. “Our team of highly trained primary and specialist care physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses are uniquely positioned to help Luther College provide practical, sustainable and affordable high-quality health care on campus serving the needs of students and sports programs. The new model of care will allow both organizations to focus on their areas of specialization: WMC to provide quality health care; Luther to provide an exceptional education. “

WMC will provide routine, preventive, acute and ongoing care to students on campus. They will also be responsible for providing COVID-19 testing and asymptomatic surveillance, and performing contact tracing.

Medical direction will be provided by Sarah Wymer, MD, family physician at Mayo Clinic Health System, and WMC will provide all other medical, nursing and auxiliary services. Dr Wymer says: “The Winneshiek Medical Center has a long history of working alongside our colleagues at the Luther Health Service to provide acute care, chronic disease and support student travel. As Luther’s student health services model evolves, I am confident and optimistic about the future and how this new model will deliver efficiencies while pursuing high quality care for the community. Luther’s student. ”

Dr Wymer is a board-certified family physician with 15 years of practice experience. She is familiar with the Luther College campus as she has been providing care through the Luther College Health Service for 10 years. In addition to Dr. Wymer’s patient care as a family physician, she also provides specialist obstetric care and comprehensive women’s health services. Dr. Wymer’s role as the Medical Director of Luther’s Health Services will not affect her schedule or her patients at the Decorah Clinic.

Emily Connor, MD, Mayo Clinic Health System Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Surgeon at WMC, will be the Luther Athletics team physician from February 2022. WMC will assume responsibility for the provision of services from athletic training for Scandinavian athletes from the next academic year.

The terms of the partnership allow staff at Luther College who currently provide health and athletic training services to transfer their jobs to Winneshiek Medical Center.
