IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are two of the most important language tests for students wishing to study abroad, especially in countries where the mode of communication is English. Thousands of candidates sit for both exams each year.

IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, while Educational Testing Service (ETS) is the body responsible for the TOEFL exam.

What are these exams and why do we have to take them?

IELTS has been the go-to option for considering education in a country where English is the main language of communication. The IELTS 2022 exam is required for migration and academic purposes in countries such as UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and some other European countries. It stands out as the only English language test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa applicants applying both from outside and inside the UK. Although IELTS is not compulsory in many universities abroad, because foreign institutions and visa issuing authorities need to be sure of your English language proficiency, it is important. Without IELTS results, your chances of getting a student visa may be in jeopardy, as visa officers may be skeptical of your English proficiency. As a result, it is safer to take the IELTS and strive for a score of at least 6 bands in total.

The TOEFL, on the other hand, is one of the most popular English proficiency exams accepted at overseas educational institutions. The ETS TOEFL exam is mostly taken by students who intend to pursue higher education in another country. Students who take the TOEFL test may be eligible for various scholarships, as well as assistance with the visa application process for students and people seeking employment abroad. The TOEFL is one of the most widely accepted English exams for students wishing to study abroad, with over 11,000 universities and institutions around the world accepting it, including universities in Australia, Canada , New Zealand, UK, USA and across Europe. and Asia. On the TOEFL test, there are no good or bad. Applicants would be required to meet the TOEFL score requirements of each university.

Types of IELTS and TOEFL exams

There are two types of IELTS exams: Academic Training and General Training. While the academic section is taken by those applying for higher education or professional registration abroad, those wishing to enroll in training programs or secondary education, or gain work experience in a country where English is the main language of communication, take the general training test.

The TOEFL test is available in three formats: TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test), TOEFL paper-based test, and TOEFL home test. The TOEFL iBT is a more popular exam option, accounting for over 98% of TOEFL exams taken worldwide. Due to the pandemic, the paper-delivered TOEFL test has been relaunched. The third, TOEFL at Home, is a TOEFL test that is taken in the comfort of one’s own home, with a proctor present to oversee the test throughout.

Exam templates

IELTS:- The listening test is divided into four sections, each containing ten questions. The first section deals with social demands, the second with circumstances in educational and training contexts, and the third and fourth sections deal with dialogue and monologue respectively. Multiple-choice questions, determining whether information is true or false, sentence completion, flowchart completion, and other tasks are included in the reading test.

Candidates learn to organize and present facts, describe steps in a process, analyze an object or event, or explain how something works in writing. They also learn to critically examine a problem and come up with answers. In the Talk section, there are three parts. In Part 1, candidates introduce themselves and respond to a wide range of topics, in Part 2, candidates talk about a particular topic while receiving a prompt. The examiner then proceeds to ask questions about it. In part three, the candidate engages in a discussion with the examiner on more abstract issues that are related to the topic of part two, the discussion lasts two to three minutes. The Oral section aims to assess fluency, lexical resource, grammatical range, pronunciation, etc. candidates.

TOEFL: – In the Reading section, you have to read three to four passages and answer ten questions about each of them. The number of correct answers in reading comprehension determines the grade for the section. You will hear lectures and conversations based on campus jargon in the listening test part. This component assesses the candidate’s ability to interpret conversations and lectures in English. Listening for fundamental insight and understanding, relating and synthesizing information are all part of this process. In the speaking section, your answers should meet the requirements of the job with only minor errors or gaps. Reviewers look for speech that is both understandable and enduring. Section grading is determined based on three main factors: delivery, use of language, and topic development. Each of the two essays must be able to successfully address a different topic. The response should be well-organized and well-developed, with appropriate explanations and plenty of supporting information. It must also demonstrate cohesion, growth and unification. If you want to get a good mark on your writing, be sure to show syntactical variations and acceptable word choice while avoiding minor grammatical mistakes.
