Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi announced last week the hiring of Joseph E. Thomas, Jr. as the city’s first police commissioner. In his role, Thomas will oversee all administrative operations and strategic planning for the Department and will report directly to Bazzi.

Thomas brings with him over 40 years of experience, focusing primarily on law enforcement leadership, training and consulting – most recently as Director of Public Safety for the Town of Ecorse. Prior to taking the Ecorse position, Thomas’s leadership roles in law enforcement include Chief of Police for the City of Muskegon Heights, the City of Southfield and the City of Inkster. His training and consulting roles include Founder and President of JET Consulting, Inc, where he developed courses and training programs related to law enforcement.

He has also served as Deputy Director of Training for the U.S. Department of State (Iraq) and Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University, Muskegon Community College, and Oakland Police Academies. and Schoolcraft.

He also holds the distinction of Michigan’s first Ambassador to the United States Army Reserve, reporting directly to the Chief Army Reserve (CAR) Officer at the Pentagon and the United States Congress – holding the equivalent of a two-star general.

Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University, as well as a Specialist Diploma in Educational Leadership and Counseling, also from EMU. Thomas holds a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Western Michigan University, a BS in Mathematics from Alcorn State University (Lorman, MS), and an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Jackson Community College. .

Thomas has a long list of other training and education courses he has taken, from organizations such as the US Department of State International Instructor’s School (Baghdad, Iraq), the US Foreign Service Institute, the US Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Domestic Preparedness, the National Fire Academy, USA. Thomas will be based at the Dearborn Heights Police Department in the city’s Michigan Avenue Justice Center. He assumes his new duties with immediate effect.
